The guide, step by step

Scene adjustment

  • Make sure the environment is evenly lit. Indoors, if hard sunlight is entering the room, close the curtains or capture when there is no harsh sunlight. Turn on all the lights.
  • Ensure that none of the objects in the scene move.
  • Keep people out of the scene, or as few as possible.
  • Avoid or minimize mirrors and glass.

Camera settings

Make sure the lenses are clean and the camera is mounted on a stick at least 1 m long. Capture in manual mode at maximum resolution, 30 fps, with the H.265 codec, a high bitrate and high video sharpness.

  1. Set ISO to Auto, with a maximum ISO of 1600.
  2. Set the shutter speed as high as possible while the image still looks bright enough.
  3. Fix the white balance to your preference so it does not drift during the capture.
  4. Use the sample shutter speeds below as a starting point.
ConditionShutter speed
Outdoor daytime1/2000 – 1/4000
Outdoor morning / evening1/640 – 1/800
Indoor daylight1/800 – 1/1000
Indoor artificial light1/640 – 1/800

Capture tips

  • Move slowly to minimize motion blur. Avoid sharp turns; turn in arcs.
  • Capture in one continuous video, 2–4 minutes long.
  • Minimize your presence in the video by keeping the camera roughly 1 m away from you.
  • Keep the camera at least 0.5 m away from any surface — walls, tables and the floor.
  • Cover the entire scene to minimize reconstruction artifacts.
  • Avoid walking from bright areas into deep shadow, or the reverse, mid-capture.
  • Move so that important areas directly face the camera lens.

Capture path

Record all five passes in the same continuous video.

  1. Pass 1 — Camera at chest level. Move slowly around the perimeter of the scene.
  2. Pass 2 — Camera at head level. Follow the same perimeter path in the opposite direction.
  3. Pass 3 — Camera at waist or knee level. Follow the same path in the same direction as Pass 1.
  4. Pass 4 — Move freely inside the scene in small loops or zig-zag patterns.
  5. Pass 5 — Focus on important objects. Move around them so the lens directly faces them.

Export settings

  • Disable auto stabilization / FlowState.
  • Export at the maximum bitrate.
  • Export as an equirectangular 360 video.

Upload to Captures Studio

Open Create 3D in Captures Studio, press Create New, then drag and drop your exported video to start the reconstruction.
